December 29, 2006 | Men's Hockey
The Wisconsin men's hockey team (7-10-2) fell 6-2 to the Clarkson Golden Knights Friday night in the second semifinal of the 18th annual Badger Hockey Showdown. The Badgers will play Providence in the third place game tomorrow, while Clarkson will face Lake Superior State in the championship game.
Clarkson struck first as Nick Dodge scored his first of three goals at the 10:22 mark of the first period. UW's Jake Dowell (Eau Claire, Wis.) notched his team leading 12th goal of the season at the 8:31 mark of the second period on a Badger power play tying the game 1-1.
Dodge answered with his second goal 21 seconds later to start Clarkson's five goal run putting the Badgers out of reach. The Golden Knights scored three goals in the second frame, and two more in the third.
With just under ten minutes to play, freshman Andy Bohmbach (Hudson, Wis.) scored his first career goal as a Badger off assists from Aaron Bendickson (Thief River Falls, Wis.) and Josh Engel (Rice Lake, Wis.). Bendickson's assists was his first point as a Badger.
Bohmbach's goal cut the Clarkson lead to 6-2, but CU goalie David Leggio was able to stop the final attack form the Badgers. Leggio ended the night with 29 saves, while UW's Elliott (Newmarket, Ontario) recorded 26. The Badgers ended the night 1-for-5 on the power play, while Clarkson finished 2-for-4.
In Friday's earlier game, the Lake Superior State Lakers knocked off the Providence Friars 2-1 to advance to the championship game of the Badger Hockey Showdown against Clarkson. The Lakers scored a goal in each of the first two periods and were able to hold off a last chance effort from Providence as time expired in the third period.
The championship game between Clarkson and Lake Superior State is set for 4 p.m. at the Kohl Center. The Badgers will face Providence in the third place game Saturday night at 7 p.m. The last time the Badgers placed third in the Showdown was 2002 when they beat Northern Michigan 3-1. Since then the Badgers have placed second twice (2003, 2004), while placing first in last year's showdown with a 5-1 victory over Northern Michigan.
Saturday's game can be heard live on AM 1310 WIBA, and will be shown live in Madison, Wis., on MyMadison TV, and in Eau Claire and La Crosse, Wis., on MyNetwork TV.
