Badger Women's Basketball Staff Changes Announced
June 15, 2006 | Women's Basketball
Badger Coach Lisa Stone announced several staff changes today including the addition of Ty Margenthaler as an assistant women's basketball coach at the University of Wisconsin. Margenthaler assumes the position vacated by third-year assistant Stephanie Schmitz, who has moved into an administrative post as the director of basketball operations with the Badgers.
'Ty brings tremendous experience to Wisconsin,' Stone said of Margenthaler. 'He comes from a coaching family with his father and brother both coaches. He has been active in the profession and is gifted in the fields of recruiting, scouting, game preparation and player development. We are very excited for him and his family to join our Badger family.'
Stone continued, 'I am equally thrilled to have Stephanie Schmitz assume the administrative position available when director of basketball operations Sheli Kuhl left to work with the UW athletics administrative staff. Steph's knowledge of our program is invaluable in this position.'
Margenthaler comes to Wisconsin after seven years with Bradley University. A 1997 graduate of Southern Illinois at Edwardsville, Margenthaler has played a role in the Braves success, both from a recruiting standpoint as well as on the court.
Margenthaler developed a pair of Bradley centers into Missouri Valley All-Conference players. Dena Williams (2002) and Ashley Chelleen (2003) both earned spots on the Valley's All-Freshman squad. Williams earned first-team All-Missouri Valley Conference honors after leading the team in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots, and later signed a contract to play professionally in Europe. Margenthaler also served as the camp coordinator and assisted with scouting duties for the Braves.
'This is a great opportunity for myself and for my family, ' Margenthaler said. 'It's with great excitement that I accept the position. I have known Lisa for quite some time when she was at Drake and I at Bradley. I respect her as a person and as a coach and know I can definitely come in and help take this program to where she wants it to go.'
With both a father and brother in coaching, Margenthaler grew up around basketball. His father, Jack, spent 15 years leading the Western Illinois Leathernecks and recently retired from coaching after sitting at the end of the SIU-Edwardsville bench for 11 seasons.
In addition, Ty's brother, Matt, was a member of the South Dakota State coaching staff for six seasons and is entering his sixth year as head coach at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Ty's playing experience includes two years at Indian Hills Community College (1992-94) before joining his father at SIU-Edwardsville for his final two collegiate seasons where he averaged better than 10 points per game and started every contest.
A native of Macomb, Ill., where he earned all-state basketball honors as a senior, Margenthaler came to Bradley after two years at SIU-Edwardsville, where he helped lead the Cougars to a 19-9 record and the NCAA Division II Tournament in 1998-99. He served as a high school coach at Roxana (Ill.) High School earning Alton Telegraph Coach of the Year honors after leading the team to the South Central Conference title and regional championship.
Margenthaler and his wife Julie have two children, Brice (6) and Nate (2).
