Badger Boys Basketball Camps in Full 'Swing'
June 27, 2006 | Men's Basketball
After more than three months of relative silence, there is once again a buzz around the Kohl Center. From June 9-July 13, boys ages 7-18 will descend upon the home of the Badgers to take part in Head Coach Bo Ryan's Wisconsin Boys Basketball Camps.
'We try to offer something for everyone during our camps, ' UW assistant Greg Gard, director of the Wisconsin Badger Basketball Camps, said. 'Whether it's a younger player just getting started or a high-school player looking to refine his skills, we think we can offer the best instruction. Our main goal is for our campers to leave having become better players and having had fun doing so.'
The camp season began June 9-10 with the first of two Shooting Camps. This intense camp is pretty self-explanatory, as it focuses on shooting and learning better mechanics. It is a two-day session for boys entering grades 4-12. The second session runs from July 8-9.
Following that was an overnight camp for boys entering grades 7-10. The two-day Father/Son Camp, for boys entering grades 3-8 and their dads, ran over Father 's Day Weekend. This unique camp offers instructions for fathers on how to work out with their sons and includes father/son contests. The photo above was taken at this year's camp, which was unique in that for the first time in camp history, all members of Coach Ryan's coaching staff had sons.
On June 19-20 was the Advanced Instruction camp for high school level boys varsity and incoming college freshmen. This exposes the campers to a Big Ten practice environment and includes strength and conditioning sessions. Due to the overwhelming response and limited space available, Advanced Camp admission had to be determined by a lottery.
The Team Camp was up next and ran from June 23-24. Enrollment was limited to the first 32 teams based on a lottery. The camp includes certified high school and college officials, team instruction by the Badger staff and an NCAA initial eligibility seminar.
A four-day overnight camp for boys entering grades 5-8 is currently in progress. The coaches and camp staff then gets a break for the Fourth of July holiday and is back at it with second session of the Shooting Camp on July 8-9.
The final camp, July 10-13, is a day camp for boys entering grades 2-6. Each day is divided into a morning and afternoon session, with campers attending one or both sessions. The goal of the camp is to teach beginners the rules and terminology along with some basic offensive and defensive fundamentals.
