Roderick Rogers, senior free safety with the Wisconsin football team, has been named to the 2006 preseason 'watch list' for the Jim Thorpe Award, which goes annually to the nation's top defensive back.
The watch list will be narrowed to 10 semi-finalists the first Monday in November and then to three finalists the Monday before Thanksgiving. The winner will be announced on ESPN's College Football Awards Show, telecast from Disney World on Dec. 7. The official presentation of the award will be in Oklahoma City on Feb. 7.
Rogers, who is also on the Lott Trophy watch list, was a second-team All-Big Ten selection last season. He started all 13 games at free safety and tied for the team lead with three interceptions. The Stone Mountain, Ga., native ranked fourth in the Big Ten with 1.08 passes defended per game and had an 84-yard interception return for a TD against Purdue.
Rogers and his teammates begin practice today (Monday) in preparation for the season-opener against Bowling Green at Cleveland Browns Stadium on Sept. 2.
