September 29, 2006 | Men's Tennis
Jeremy Sonkin (Wheaton, Ill.) will take a crack at some of the top collegiate men 's tennis players in the nation when he competes at the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tennis Championships Oct. 2-4, hosted by Tulsa University in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Sonkin, who received a preseason national ranking of 80 by the ITA, will be thrown into the mix with the likes of No. 1 seed and defending tournament champion John Isner from Georgia, 2006 NCAA singles finalist Somdev Devvarman of Virginia, and 2006 ACC player of the year Luigi D'Agord. The tough competition does not stop there, however, as 36 of the top 40 players from the Fila national singles rankings will be participating.
Sonkin does not have to play in the tournament's pre-qualifying rounds, which take place on Saturday (Sept. 30) and Sunday (Oct. 1).
The qualifying tournament, which Sonkin will partake in, will feature 128 participants. It starts on Monday (Oct. 2) and finishes on Wednesday (Oct. 4).
Should Sonkin make it out of the qualifying rounds, he would then move on to the 64-player main draw, which will be played from Thursday (Oct. 5) through Sunday (Oct. 8).
Sonkin's participation in the All-American Tennis Championships will mark his first action of the 2006 fall season. Sonkin finished last year's season with a 16-7 overall record, including a 7-5 Big Ten record, playing at the No.1 singles spot for the Badgers.
