Casillas Tabbed for Big Ten Weekly Award
September 04, 2006 | Football
The Big Ten Conference office announced today that University of Wisconsin sophomore Jonathan Casillas has been selected as Big Ten Special Teams Co-Player of the Week.
Casillas earned his first such award by blocking a punt against Bowling Green on Saturday, then recovering it in the end zone to give the Badgers their first lead of the game (14-7). The blocked punt was Casillas' third in 13 career games.
The linebacker from New Brunswick, N.J., also was a force on defense, racking up 12 tackles and 2.5 TFLs.
In 2005, Casillas blocked a punt against Minnesota that teammate Ben Strickland recovered for the go-ahead and eventual game-winning score with less than one minute remaining in the game. He also blocked a punt against Illinois, helping UW put the game out of reach after it scored two plays later.
Casillas shares the award with Northwestern senior TE/FB Erryn Cobb, who also blocked and recovered a punt.
