October 11, 2007 | Men's Swimming & Diving
In the Big Ten opener, the Wisconsin men's swimming and diving team beat Iowa 175-125 at the UW Natatorium Thursday night.
Head Coach Eric Hansen was pleased with the meet's results. '"I like how the team came together tonight,' said Hansen. 'We had some kids who were pretty beat up, but they made the best of it and swam through it. They need to learn how to do that as we progress through the season.'
The Badgers put the first points on the board, as their `B' relay team placed first in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:33.88.
Freshman Kyle Thompson was able to beat Iowa's Brian Farris in a nail-biting 1,000-yard freestyle as Thompson edged out Farris for the win. Thompson placed second in the 500-yard freestyle later in the meet with his time of 4:46.42.
Junior Scott Rice took second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:41.98) and later won the 100-yard butterfly (51.56).

Junior Eric Johnson placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke (58.86) and senior Mike Hopkins won the 200-yard backstroke (1:51.31).
Wisconsin swept the 200-yard butterfly as senior Brett Koerten (1:53.99), Rice (1:55.14) and Thompson (1:56.5) took first, second and third place respectively.
In the next event, the 50-yard freestyle, UW took first through third place again as junior Kyle Sorensen (21.22), sophomore Phil Davies (21.60) and freshman Mitch Buenger (21.63) were the top three finishers. Sorensen also won the 100-yard freestyle with his time of 46.86.
In diving, freshman Caleb Percevecz won his second 1-meter diving title (300.30) and placed third in on the 3-meter board (290.18).
