Women's Hockey Travels to St. Cloud
October 18, 2007 | Women's Hockey
The No. 1 Wisconsin women's hockey team plays its first WCHA road series of the season as they travel to St. Cloud, Minn., facing off against St. Cloud State Oct. 19-20 at the National Hockey Center.
Last weekend the Badgers broke the NCAA record for the longest unbeaten streak in Division I women's hockey history by posting a win and a tie against Ohio State at the Kohl Center.
With a 4-0 victory on Saturday the Badgers extended their unbeaten streak to 31 games, eclipsing the previous mark of 30 games set by New Hampshire during the 2005-06 season. In the game junior goaltender Jessie Vetter (Cottage Grove, Wis.) was solid in net as she turned away 12 Ohio State shots to earn her 18th career shutout and third of the season. Vetter's shutout tied her with former Badger Christine Dufour for first on the school's career shutout list.
Wisconsin tallied goals from four separate Badgers including freshmen Mallory Deluce (London, Ontario) and Kelly Nash (Bonita, Calif.). Sophomore Jasmine Giles (Ottawa, Ontario) and junior Kayla Hagen (Crosslake, Minn.) each notched their first goals of the season as well.
In Sunday's game, the Badgers found themselves down 2-1 after two periods, marking the first time that UW has trailed since the Buckeyes put themselves up 2-0 in the first period back on Feb. 9, 2006 at the Kohl Center.
But like the game in 2006, the Badgers did not allow the Buckeyes to maintain the lead. Freshman Mallory Deluce scored midway through the third period with the assist credited to senior Jinelle Zaugg (Eagle River, Wis.), who notched a point earlier when she scored the Badgers' first goal of the game.
Wisconsin went on to tie the Buckeyes 2-2 in the game to push its unbeaten streak to 32 games, going 28-0-4 in that stretch. The Badgers are now 5-0-1 on the season, including 1-0-1 in conference play.
Wisconsin looks to tie another NCAA record this weekend at St. Cloud as UW enters the series on a 20-game road unbeaten streak. The Badgers, who are 17-0-3 in their last 20 road games, are two games shy of the 22-game road unbeaten streak record set by Minnesota from Nov. 2001- Jan. 2003. The Golden Gophers went 21-0-1 in that stretch.
The Badgers are 28-4-2 all-time against St. Cloud State, including 11-3-2 on the road. The Huskies, who sport a 1-2-1 overall record, are coming off a 2-1 win against No. 10 Minnesota last weekend.
Both games this weekend will be broadcast live online by B2 Networks. Fans can access the pay-per-view broadcasts by clicking here .
