Record Streak Snapped, UW Falls 2-1
October 19, 2007 | Women's Hockey
The No. 1 Wisconsin women's hockey team saw its NCAA record 32-game unbeaten streak come to an end as it fell to St. Cloud State 2-1 Friday night at the National Hockey Center.
The loss was the first for the Badgers (5-1-1 overall, 1-1-1 WCHA) since a 2-0 loss to Minnesota Duluth on Nov. 24, 2006 at the Kohl Center. Wisconsin went 28-0-4 during that stretch.
Down 2-1 late in the third period and with the goalie pulled, Wisconsin appeared to have tied the game at 2-2 with seven seconds left in regulation when sophomore Emily Kranz (Waukesha, Wis.) ripped a shot through a crowd in front of the St. Cloud cage. However, the play was reviewed and the goal was waved off due to a UW player in the crease.
UW goalie Jessie Vetter (Cottage Grove, Wis.) made 17 saves for the Badgers while Kendall Newell stopped 35 shots to earn the win for the Huskies (2-2-1, 2-2-1).
For the first time this season, the Badgers found themselves down 1-0. Vetter was unable to control a rebound and Meaghan Pezon blasted it into the net at the 3:35 mark of the opening period.
The Badgers responded just over nine minutes later when sophomore Kyla Sanders (Parrish, Fla.) snapped a shot from the bottom of the right circle just inside the far post to knot the contest at 1-1. Freshman Kelly Nash (Bonita, Calif.) was credited with the lone assist on Sanders' fourth goal of the season.
Following a scoreless second period, Felicia Nelson put the Huskies back in front 13:30 into the third frame. Laura Fast found Nelson open on the far post to redirect the puck past Vetter, giving Nelson her first goal of the season.
Wisconsin and St. Cloud each went 0-for-4 on the power play.
The Badgers and Huskies conclude their series Saturday night at the National Hockey Center. Faceoff is set for 7:07 p.m.
