Deluce's Hat Trick Leads UW Past Huskies, 5-0
October 20, 2007 | Women's Hockey
The line of senior Jinelle Zaugg and freshmen Mallory Deluce and Hilary Knight combined for all five goals and six assists to lead the No. 1 Wisconsin women's hockey team to a 5-0 victory over St. Cloud State Saturday night at the National Hockey Center.
Deluce (London, Ontario) led the way with three goals and an assist while Knight (Hanover, N.H.) added four assists as the Badgers (6-1-1 overall, 2-1-1 WCHA) shut out their opponent for the fifth time in eight games this season. Zaugg (Eagle River, Wis.) tallied the other two goals and also earned an assist.
In the UW net, junior Jessie Vetter (Cottage Grove, Wis.) made 12 saves to earn her 19th career shutout, breaking the school record for career shutouts which she had previously shared with Christine Dufour.
Vetter's counterpart, Kendall Newell, made 37 saves for St. Cloud, which fell to 2-3-1 both overall and in league play.
Deluce put the Badgers ahead 1-0 8:46 into the opening period with her first goal of the night. Sophomore Jasmine Giles (Ottawa, Ontario) fired a shot from the right point which Deluce tipped past Newell from the top of the crease. Giles and Knight each earned assists on the power-play goal.
Just over five minutes later, Zaugg doubled the UW advantage. Deluce set up Zaugg for a one-timer from between the circles. Although Newell made the initial save, Zaugg followed up her own rebound and flipped a back-hander over Newell's shoulder.
Deluce and Knight were credited with assists on Zaugg's 68th career goal, moving her into sole possession of third place on the UW career goals list. Meghan Hunter is first with 84 career goals while Sara Bauer is second on the list with 80.
Wisconsin extended its lead to 3-0 6:14 into the second period. Freshman Olivia Jakiel (Santa Clarita, Calif.) took a wrist shot from the point which Deluce redirected past Newell while she was cutting through the low slot.
Zaugg and Knight combined again 3:22 into the third period to put the Badgers up 4-0. Knight blocked a shot in the UW zone and pushed the puck ahead to Zaugg, who skated the puck into the right corner of the SCSU zone. Zaugg then cut around a pair of defenders and snapped a shot that beat Newell to the near post.
Deluce added her third goal of the contest midway through the third. Playing on the power play, Knight fired a shot that hit the crossbar and dropped straight down to the ice. Deluce was there to tap in the rebound, completing her first career hat trick.
Wisconsin finished the game 2-for-10 on the power play while St. Cloud was 0-for-5.
The Badgers return to the ice Oct. 26-27 to play host to Minnesota State at the Kohl Center. Faceoff is slated for 2:07 p.m. each day while Friday's contest will be part of the annual Kid's Day at the Kohl.
