No. 1 Badgers Welcome No. 6 Gophers to Madison
October 31, 2007 | Women's Hockey
After regaining the top spot in both polls earlier this week, the No. 1 Wisconsin women 's hockey team continues WCHA action this weekend when it plays host to No. 6/7 Minnesota Nov. 2-3 at the Kohl Center.
These will be the latest games in the most-played series in UW history. Wisconsin (8-1-1, 4-1-1 WCHA) and Minnesota (5-2-1, 3-2-1) have met 40 times in their history. The Badgers are 9-1-1 against their border rival since the start of the 2005-06 season, including 4-0-1 last season.
The puck drops at 2 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday. On Saturday, fans can use their ticket stubs from the Friday night men's hockey game against Michigan Tech to receive free admission to the women's hockey series finale against Minnesota.
Women's hockey fans who can't make it to the Kohl Center this weekend will still have the opportunity to watch the Badgers face the Golden Gophers live on their computers. For the second straight season, all UW women's hockey games at the Kohl Center will be video streamed live on uwbadgers.com.
Fans can access the FREE video feed by going to uwbadgers.com and selecting the WEBCASTS tab at the top right of the front page.
Last weekend, the Badgers posted a pair of 4-2 victories to record a weekend sweep of Minnesota State Oct. 26-27 at the Kohl Center. With the wins, Wisconsin climbed into first place in the WCHA with a 4-1-1 record in conference play.
Junior Alycia Matthews (Castlegar, British Columbia) recorded a goal and two assists to lead the Badgers to a 4-2 victory on Friday. Matthews, who was named this week's WCHA Defensive Player of the Week, assisted on Wisconsin's first two goals before scoring the eventual game-winning goal midway through the second period. The goal was the third of Matthews' career, with all three proving to be game-winners.
In what was a back-and-forth contest all afternoon Saturday, freshman Hilary Knight 's (Hanover, N.H.) breakaway goal late in the third period proved to be the game winner. Matthews added the primary assist on the goal to push her season point total to nine (2 goals, 7 asssists).
Faceoff between the Badgers and Gophers is set for 2 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at the Kohl Center.
