The UW men's swimming team swept this week's Big Ten awards with stellar performances by Scott Rice and Caleb Percevecz at UW-Green Bay over the weekend, the Big Ten conference announced Tuesday.
Scott Rice (Des Moines, Wash.) was named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week while Caleb Percevecz (Scottsdale, Ariz.) claimed the Big Ten Diver of the Week award.
Rice got off to a great start in his junior year, recording three first-place finishes at the UW-Green Bay dual meet. Rice out-swam the field in the 200-yard freestyle (1:44.18) and 100-yard butterfly (50.21). The Washington native also contributed to Wisconsin 's first-place 200-yard medley relay team (1:36.09). The junior native claimed his third Big Ten Swimmer of the Week award and was the last UW swimmer to win the honor, just less than a year ago on Oct. 17, 2006.
In his first-ever meet at the collegiate level, Percevecz compiled first-place finishes in both the one-meter and three-meter dives. The Arizona native out-dove his opponents by nearly 15 points in each event, scoring 275.85 off the one-meter and 245.63 on the three meter. The freshman picked up his first of what Wisconsin hopes to be many more Big Ten weekly honors. UW's last Big Ten Diver of the Week was Kelly Todd on Oct. 10, 2006.
The UW swimming and diving team will face its next competition later this week when they host Iowa on Thursday, Oct. 11, and then UW-Milwaukee on Friday, Oct. 12. Both events will start at 5 p.m. at the Natatorium.
