Six different Badgers each recorded goals and Jessie Vetter earned her sixth shutout of the season as the No. 2/3 Wisconsin women's hockey team defeated Bemidji State 7-0 Friday night at the John Glas Fieldhouse.
Senior Jinelle Zaugg (Eagle River, Wis.) led the way with a pair of goals while Alycia Matthews (Castlegar, British Columbia), Hilary Knight (Hanover, N.H.), Erika Lawler (Fitchburg, Mass.), Kelly Nash (Bonita, Calif.) and Meghan Duggan (Danvers, Mass.) tallied the remaining goals as the Badgers (10-4-1 overall, 6-2-1 WCHA) snapped a three-game losing streak.
Vetter (Cottage Grove, Wis.) made 13 saves in the game to notch her 21st career shutout. The win is the 40th of Vetter's career in just her 51st career game.
After going just 1-for-14 on the power play last weekend at New Hampshire, the Badgers responded by scoring on their first three opportunities on Friday. UW finished the game 3-for-7.
Goalie Emily Brookshaw made 37 saves in the losing effort for Bemidji State, which fell to 1-10-2 overall on the season and 0-8-1 in WCHA play.
Zaugg gave the Badgers a 1-0 lead just 34 seconds into the contest. Knight carried the puck into the right corner, then slid a pass to Zaugg in the low slot. Zaugg snapped a quick shot that hit Brookshaw in the left shoulder on its way into the Bemidji State net.
Matthews doubled the UW lead just 1:18 later when her slap shot from the point through traffic beat Brookshaw. Duggan and Lawler each earned assists on the power-play goal, which was Matthews' third of the season.
Less than two minutes later, Knight gave Wisconsin a 3-0 lead with her sixth goal of the season. Skating on the power play, senior captain Emily Morris (Massena, N.Y.) ripped a slap shot from the left point which was tipped past Brookshaw by Knight.
The Badgers added one more power-play goal midway through the first as Zaugg tallied her second goal of the period. Lawler fired a shot on goal from the top of the left circle which was stopped by Brookshaw, however Zaugg was there to knock in the rebound and put the Badgers ahead 4-0 at the first intermission.
With the pair of goals, Zaugg now has 73 in her career, placing her third on the school 's career goal list and just seven behind former Badger Sara Bauer in second place. Meghan Hunter holds the record with 84 career goals.
Wisconsin extended its lead to 6-0 with a pair of rebound goals in the second period. First Lawler tapped the puck into an open net at the 11:19 mark, then Giles slid the puck past Brookshaw 1:26 later for her third goal of the season.
Duggan went on to add a seventh goal for Wisconsin late in the third period to provide the final margin.
The Badgers and Beavers will conclude their WCHA series Saturday afternoon at the John Glas Fieldhouse. Faceoff is slated for 2:07 p.m.
