UW and BSU Skate to Scoreless Tie
November 24, 2007 | Women's Hockey
Despite out-shooting Bemidji State 50-14, the No. 2 Wisconsin women's hockey team was unable to find the back of the net and had to settle for a 0-0 tie Saturday afternoon at the John Glas Fieldhouse.
Making her second career start, sophomore goalie Alannah McCready (Blaine, Minn.) made 14 saves for the Badgers, who are now 10-4-2 overall this season and 6-2-2 in WCHA play. McCready is now 1-0-1 in her career with two shutouts.
One night after allowing seven goals to Wisconsin, goalie Emily Brookshaw made a career high 50 saves for Bemidji State (1-10-3, 0-8-2). Brookshaw broke the BSU record for career saves in the second period.
Although the Badgers out-shot the Beavers 14-3 in both the first and second periods, the teams took the ice for third period deadlocked at 0-0.
Wisconsin increased the pressure in the final period, out-shooting Bemidji State 20-7 in the frame. The shooting gallery culminated with perhaps Wisconsin's best chance of the afternoon with just over one minute left in regulation. Sophomore Meghan Duggan (Danvers, Mass.) deflected a shot from the point by Alycia Matthews (Castlegar, British Columbia) that hit the post behind Brookshaw, but bounced back out into the crease and was cleared.
The Badgers were only able to generate two shots in the overtime period while the Beavers sent one shot in on McCready in the extra session.
Wisconsin finished the game 0-for-6 on the power play while Bemidji State went 0-for-2.
UW attempted 116 shots in the contest compared to 30 for BSU. However, Wisconsin had 38 shots blocked, missed the net on 27 more and also hit one post.
Saturday's game marked the first scoreless tie in the history of the UW women's hockey program.
The Badgers return to Madison to play host to Minnesota Duluth Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 at the Kohl Center in a rematch of the 2007 NCAA championship game. Faceoff is slated for 2:07 p.m. each day.
