Wisconsin Falls to UMD 3-1
November 30, 2007 | Women's Hockey
Junior Tia Hanson scored her first goal of the season, but it wasn't enough as the No. 4 Wisconsin women's hockey team fell to No. 3 Minnesota Duluth 3-1 Friday afternoon at the Kohl Center.
Junior goaltender Jessie Vetter (Cottage Grove, Wis.) made 19 saves for the Badgers (10-5-2, 6-3-2 WCHA) as she suffered only her seventh loss in 52 career games.
UMD (11-3-1, 10-3-0) was able to get on the board first at 13:26 into the first period. The puck was dumped into the left corner and the Badgers were unable to clear it out. Freshman Laura Frinfinnson skated in and slipped a backhanded shot past Vetter for the game 's first goal.
The Bulldogs began the second period on the power play and were able to take advantage. UMD's Iya Gavrilova scored the power play goal just 49 seconds into the second, putting Duluth up 2-0.
Wisconsin kept fighting though and finally scored at 14:06 in the second frame. After a Bulldog defenseman missed a pass at the point, Erika Lawler (Fitchburg, Mass.) streaked all the way down the ice and was able to win the puck back for the Badgers. Lawler let it go for Hanson (Medicine Hat, Alberta) who unleashed a slapshot over the left shoulder of Duluth goaltender Kim Martin closing the lead to 2-1. The goal, which was Hanson's first of the season, was also her first since Jan. 20, 2007.
With 16:38 to go in the period though, UMD tallied another goal securing the lead at 3-1. Despite having a 5-3 advantage in the final period and a number of scoring opportunities, the Badgers could not find the net.
Wisconsin was 0-for-7 on the power play compared to UMD who went 1-for-3.
The Badgers and the Bulldogs wrap up their series tomorrow afternoon at the Kohl Center. The puck is set to drop at 2:07 p.m.
