Wisconsin and Colgate Skate to 2-2 Draw in OT
December 28, 2007 | Men's Hockey
The University of Wisconsin men's hockey team (7-7-3, 4-5-1 WCHA) skated to a 2-2 draw with Colgate University (7-7-3, 1-3-2 ECAC Hockey), but fell in a shootout on Friday as part of the Badger Hockey Showdown at the Kohl Center.
The Badgers controlled the majority of the first period, taking 11 shots to Colgate 's six. The Raiders, however, scored midway through the period to earn a one-goal lead. Assistant captain Tyler Burton used his body to knock the puck past Badger goaltender Scott Gudmanson (Sherwood Park, Alberta) who had just made a save on a shot from Raider Jesse Winchester. Burton's eighth goal of the season came 12 minutes and 30 seconds into the game.
Although the score remained 1-0 Colgate after the second stanza, the Badgers again controlled the ice for the majority of the period. Wisconsin created some great scoring opportunities, but was unable to convert on them. After a penalty on senior Josh Engel (Rice Lake, Wis.) and a subsequent charging call on freshman Patrick Johnson (Madison, Wis.) the Badgers were on the lower end of a 1:46 three-on-five opportunity.
The Kohl Center was roaring as Wisconsin kept the Raiders scoreless on the two-man advantage. Colgate was firing shots at Gudmanson from all directions. Assistant captain Ben Street (Coquiltam, B.C.) gave up his stick to senior captain Davis Drewiske (Hudson, Wis.), who had lost his. The Badgers were able to contain the Raiders, and after almost a minute and a half of the power play, Ryan McDonagh (Arden Hills, Minn.) intercepted a Raider shot and sent it all the way to the other end of the ice as the penalties expired.
After the third period of play, the score was tied at two apiece. Sophomore Aaron Bendickson (Thief River Falls, Minn.) and Johnson each tallied goals in the period for the Badgers. Bendickson's second career goal was an impressive one. The sophomore went on a one-on-one with a defender, slipping the puck past him and through Raider goaltender Mark Dekanich's legs.
Colgate scored another goal to tie the game for good. Winchester's goal, which came just over five minutes in, was assisted by Burton and Kevin McNamara. At the end of regulation, the Badgers had outshot the Raiders 32-16.
A scoreless overtime led to a five-player shootout, which then led to a sudden death shootout. Neither team was able to score on the five-man shootout. Both Wisconsin and Colgate had two misses in the sudden death shootout before Colgate forward Burton took a shot which slipped past Gudmanson. Podge Turnbull (Hayward, Wis.) took the last shot for the Badgers, but was unable to find the back of the net.
Freshman Craig Johnson (Waupaca, Wis.) made his Badger debut on Friday night because the Badgers temporarily lost three players to the 2008 IIHF World Junior Championships in the Czech Republic. Canada's Kyle Turris (New Westminster, B.C.) and USA's Blake Geoffrion (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Jaime McBain (Faribault, Minn.) are participating in this year's event.
The Badgers, whose record will reflect a tie after tonight's game, will face Bowling Green on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the third place game of the Badger Hockey Showdown. The game will be broadcast live on My Madison TV and live stats can be followed at UWBADGERS.COM.
