February 19, 2007 | Men's Basketball
The Wisconsin men's basketball team (26-2, 12-1 Big Ten) earned its first-ever No. 1 ranking in the Associated Press Poll released Monday. The Badgers lead the nation in both wins and winning percentage. Ohio State remains No. 2 followed by Florida and UCLA.
Wisconsin was ranked third heading into last week's games, but then-No. 1 Florida lost Saturday and the Badgers leapfrogged Ohio State for the top spot. UW beat the Buckeyes, 72-69, in Madison back on Jan. 9.
The Badgers were ranked second in the poll released Jan. 29 before a loss at Indiana dropped the team to No. 4. This past week, UW won at Minnesota before taking out Penn State Saturday in Madison.
Wisconsin is playing in two nationally-televised games this week. The Badgers play at Michigan State Tuesday on ESPN. The Badgers and Buckeyes meet Sunday in Columbus, Ohio. CBS will cover the 3 p.m. tip.
UW set a school record for wins in a season after beating Penn State Saturday. The Badgers extended their home winning streak to 21 games and remained tied with Ohio State atop the Big Ten standings.
Wisconsin moved up to No. 2 in the ESPN / USA Today Coaches Poll, also released Monday. Ohio State holds the top spot in that poll.
