Anderson Earns District All-American Honors
March 09, 2007 | Women's Basketball
Junior Jolene Anderson (Port Wing, Wis.) became just the sixth Badger and the first since 2002 to earn Kodak/WBCA District All-America honors. The 5-8 junior guard now becomes part of the national ballot from which the 10-member Kodak All-American team is selected by a vote of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association national committee and released March 28 at the NCAA Women's Final Four in Cleveland, Ohio.
A 2007 first team All-Big Ten honoree, Anderson has led the Badgers in scoring and rebounding for three years, and was the 2007 Big Ten scoring leader averaging 19.3 points per game in conference games. She was the fastest UW scorer to both 1,000 and 1,500 points, and is just 16 points shy of the UW record for most points in a season with 585 for an 18.9 points per game average. She is one of just two juniors named to the team and averaged 7.2 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.4 steals per game this season.
Other members of the WBCA District IV team include Amanda Brown, Sr., Penn State; three-time Big Ten player of the year Jessica Davenport, Sr., Ohio State; Katie Gearlds, Sr., Purdue; Nicole Soulis, Sr., UW-Green Bay; and Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton, Jr., Purdue.
Past Badgers earning Kodak All-District All-America honors include Tamara Moore, 2002; Jessie Stomski, 2001; Keisha Anderson, 1997; Barb Franke, 1995 and 1996; and Robin Threatt, 1992.
UW TEAM AWAITS POST SEASON FATE
The Badger women's basketball team is spending this week practicing and awaiting its post-season fate. The NCAA selection show is Monday on ESPN at 7 p.m. CST. Should the team NOT be selected for the NCAA tournament, it has put in a bid to play in the WNIT (Women's National Invitational Tournament). Those selections will be posted on the WNIT web site around 10 p.m. CST.
The Badgers are 19-12 overall and enjoying their best season since 2001-02. UW tied for fifth place in the Big Ten with a 7-9 record. UW beat Michigan in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament, then lost 82-79 in overtime to the eventual tournament champion, Purdue, in the quarter-finals.
