June 12, 2007 | Lightweight Rowing
Juniors Kristin Hedstrom (Concord, Mass.) and Christi Halleen (Madison, Wis.) have been recognized as members of the 2007 Pocock All-American Lightweight Rowing Team, the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) has announced. Hedstrom and Halleen become part of the inaugural lightweight All-America team.
Hedstrom, Wisconsin's seven seat in its lightweight eight, is a two-time academic All-Big Ten selection. A transfer from Georgetown, she also served the Badgers as one of the this year's team captains. Halleen rowed as the three seat in the lightweight eight this season. Both helped the varsity lightweight eight to a national title in 2006 and a bronze medal at the 2007 Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships. The duo was also a part of the 2007 Eastern Sprints championship crew, winning a conference title in the women's lightweight eight for the UW.
The UW varsity lightweight eight spent much of the 2007 season ranked No. 1 in the nation and entered the national championships unbeaten, but after titles the previous three years, the Badgers won the bronze at this year's event. The Badgers should be expected to again compete for a title in 2008 as only one senior departs from this year's third-place boat.
To become an All-American rower a student-athlete must be part of a varsity rowing program, and meet all eligibility rules as defined by her institution, including being in compliance with NCAA eligibility rules and the nominating coach of the student-athlete 's institution must be a member in good standing of the CRCA . Awards are then distributed based on results from the national championships, with the top three boats putting two members on the team, and the winning boat contributing its coxswain. The remaining three crews each put one rower on the team.
