Badgers Open Season at Pioneer Invitational
September 14, 2007 | Men's Cross Country
The No.1-ranked Wisconsin men's cross country team opens the 2007 season Saturday at the Pioneer Invitational in Waukesha, Wis. The meet is hosted by Carroll College and slated to begin at 11:45 a.m. at Minooka Park.
Wisconsin will send 10 runners to the meet, including five redshirt freshmen from their highly touted recruiting class of a year ago. Leading the way for the Badgers will be junior Christian Wagner, a 2006 All-American and a first-team All-Big Ten member.
Last season, the Badgers won the meet in dominating fashion, scoring 17 points to best second-place Monmouth by 59 points. UW swept the top-four spots and placed all five of its runners in the top seven finishers. Running for the first time in a Badger uniform, then redshirt freshman Brandon Bethke covered the 8,000-meter course in 25 minutes, 50 seconds to take first place. He would be honored as the Big Ten Conference Co-Runner of the Week for his effort.
In addition to the Wisconsin men's and women's programs, Ripon College, Silver Lake College, Maranatha Baptist Bible College, Illinois Institute of Technology, Mount Mary College, Alverno College and the Greater Milwaukee Track Club are also scheduled to participate.
