IOWA CITY, Iowa.--Iowa''s Shonn Greene carried 25 times for 217 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Hawkeyes (5-3 overall, 2-2 Big Ten) to a 38-16 victory over Wisconsin (3-4, 0-4) at Kinnick Stadium on Saturday. The win for Iowa allowed the Hawkeyes to re-take possession of the Heartland Trophy.
Wisconsin 0 - 3 - 6 - 7 -- 16
Iowa 7 - 7 - 14 - 10 -- 38
Wisconsin finished the game with a statistical edge in time of possession, total yards, passing yards, first downs and third-down percentage. But none of those numbers tell the story.
The Hawkeyes scored twice in the first half on 12 and 34-yard touchdown runs by Greene. The Badgers countered with a 42-yard field goal by Philip Welch with 59 seconds left in the first half. Neither team had been overwhelming offensively in the first half and the game was still up for grabs after Welch connected on third-quarter field goals of 40 and 35 yards to cut the Hawkeye lead to 14-9.
But Greene''s 52-yard touchdown run with 5:06 remaining in the third quarter was a back-breaker. The Badgers got the ball back, but were forced to punt. Brad Nortman ''s punt was blocked and Iowa had the ball at the UW 33-yard line. Moments later, Ricky Stanzi threw a 16-yard TD pass to Allen Reisner and it was 28-9.
Iowa intercepted first-time starter Dustin Sherer twice in the fourth quarter resulting in another Greene TD and a field goal that made it 38-9. Badger sophomore Scott Tolzien replaced Sherer and guided the UW to its only touchdown of the day, a 21-yard run by Zach Brown.
