UW blanks SCSU for weekend split
November 22, 2008 | Men's Hockey
The Wisconsin men's hockey team beat out St. Cloud State this Saturday with a 1-0 shutout at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. to split the series with the Huskies.
After a relatively high-scoring game last night, the Badgers and the Huskies had trouble finding the net this Saturday. The score remained tied at 0-0 throughout the first and the second periods until UW put the first, and only, mark on the board early in the third period.
The Badgers came out strong offensively, outshooting St. Cloud State 18-7 in the first period, although they were unable to find the back of the net. The Huskies edged out UW in shooting in the second period 13-10, although Wisconsin outshot SCSU 40-26 overall.
The Badgers had a couple near-goals in the second period. A little over halfway into the period, junior Blake Geoffrion (Brentwood, Tenn.) attempted a shot from a bad angle and the puck almost snuck by Jase Weslosky as he played it too casually, but Weslosky made the save nevertheless.
At 18:22 in the third period, freshman Jordy Murray (Faribault, Minn.) scored the lone goal of the game. Murray finished off a play near the SCSU net after the puck was intercepted on a sloppy rebound from SCSU goaltender Jase Weslosky. Freshman Jake Gardiner (Minnetonka, Minn.) and junior Andy Bohmbach (Hudson, Wis.) were credited with the assists.
The Badgers went 0-for-4 on the power play, while the Huskies went 0-for-7.
After spending five of their first seven weekends on the road, UW returns home next weekend for the College Hockey Showcase. This series is the first of eight consecutive home sets for Wisconsin. The Badgers face Michigan State on Friday night and Michigan on Saturday. Both games are set to start at 7 p.m. Central.
