Goloubef named WCHA Defensive Player of the Week
December 09, 2008 | Men's Hockey
For the second consecutive week, a Wisconsin men's hockey player earned recognition from the WCHA office as sophomore defenseman Cody Goloubef (Oakville, Ontario) has been named the WCHA Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday.
A 6-0, 185-pound sophomore, Goloubef scored both game-winning goals and helped key a strong defensive effort by the Badgers in a series that saw them run their winning streak to five straight, improve to 9-1-1 over the last 11 games, and move into sole possession of first place in the WCHA race. Wisconsin blanked UAA in four of six periods and held them to just one power-play goal in 14 man-advantage opportunities.
An NHL draftee of the Columbus Blue Jackets, Goloubef's two game-winning goals were his first two goals of the 2008-09 season. He had the winner at 17:43 of the second period last Friday (Dec. 5) night and the winner at 7:49 of the second last Saturday (Dec. 6) evening. In addition, he also had five shots on goal in the series and earned a +3 plus/minus rating. On the season, Goloubef has six points (2g, 4a) in 18 games and is one of two Badgers who have been invited to Canada's World Junior Team tryouts beginning Dec. 11.
Also nominated this week were Marc Cheverie, a goaltender from Denver, and Brad Miller, a defenseman from North Dakota.
Last week, UW freshman defenseman Jake Gardiner was named the WCHA Rookie of the Week.
UW junior forward Michael Davies was nominated for the WCHA Offensive Player of the Week award, while freshman forward Derek Stepan was nominated for the WCHA Rookie of the Week honor.
