UW Falls to Minnesota
April 12, 2008 | Women's Tennis
The Wisconsin women's tennis team (7-13 overall, 0-8) failed in its bid to pick up its first Big Ten win, falling to No. 73 Minnesota (12-8, 2-5) on Saturday at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis, Minn.
The Gophers grabbed the early lead in doubles after scoring wins in the No.1 and No. 2 positions. In the top spot, Karina Chiarelli and Lindsay Risebrough were too much for junior Elizabeth Carpenter (Sierra Madre, Calif.) and freshman Jessica Seyferth (Ann Arbor, Mich.), dropping the Badger duo 8-2.
Alessandra Ferrazzi and Tijana Koprivica followed close behind with an 8-4 win over senior Morgan Tuttle (Winnetka, Ill.) and freshman Emese Kardhordo (Budapest, Hungary) at No.2 to lock up the point.
Senior Chelsea Nusslock (Lake Forest, Ill.) and sophomore Katya Mirnova (Madison, Wis.) ended the doubles point on a positive note for UW by scoring an 8-4 win over Mikayla Rogers and Jackie Sperling at No. 3. The win improved Nusslock and Mirnova's record together this spring to 6-2, the top winning percentage of any Badger duo.
In singles action, the Badgers were in many close matches, but were unable to record a win against the Gophers.
In the third position, Chiarelli downed Kardhordo 6-2, 6-4 to give Minnesota a 2-0 lead.
The Gophers subsequently locked up the victory when Danielle Mousseau topped Tuttle 6-1, 7-5 at No. 5 and Risebrough defeated Seyferth 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) at No. 2.
Wisconsin will next travel to No. 47 Iowa (11-5, 2-4) for an 11 a.m. matchup. Check back to uwbadgers.com for full results following the match.
