
Piper takes turn at Olympic Trials

Former University of Wisconsin standout Carly Piper finished 24th in the preliminaries of the women's 200-meter freestyle to lead a contingent of four athletes with ties to the Badgers' swimming program Tuesday at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials.
Piper, an 18-time All-American during her career at Wisconsin, clocked in at 2:00.70 in her heat of the prelims at the Qwest Center, missing the cut of 16 swimmers who advanced to the event's semifinal round by seven-tenths of a second.
UW senior-to-be Jen Illescas also swam in the prelims of the 200 free and posted the 77th-fastest time in 2:03.72. American record-holder Katie Hoff laid down the top qualifying time with her clocking of 1:57.72.
In the prelims of the men's 200 butterfly, incoming freshman Brett Nagle clocked the No. 60 time by recording a 2:03.54. Sophomore-to-be Kyle Thompson was 76th-fastest in the event with a time of 2:05.81. The top qualifying time for the event 's semifinals went to Davis Tarwater, who clocked in at 1:55.15.
The U.S. Olympic Trials continue Wednesday for seven past, current and future UW swimmers, including five who will compete in the men's 100-meter freestyle prelims.
