The game was scoreless until the Badgers (14-35, 2-12 Big Ten) were able to score both of their runs in the sixth inning. Right fielder Ashley Hanewich started off the inning hitting a double down the left field line and was brought in by Theresa Boruta's two-out single up the middle. Boruta then stole second to get into scoring position, followed by a Livi Abney single that moved Boruta to third.
Head coach Chandelle Schulte then called a double-steal play with Abney at first and Boruta at third. Northern Illinois (15-34, 9-9 MAC) attempted to get the out at second but the throw was late resulting in Boruta stealing home from third for the Badgers' second run of the game.
The Badgers will travel to Michigan State this weekend for a two-game conference match up. Game times are scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 2, and 12 p.m. on Sunday, May 3.
