Wisconsin Post-Game Notes
Wisconsin vs. Fresno State
Sept. 12, 2009
Camp Randall Stadium ' Madison, Wis.
Team Notes
- Today's attendance was 80,353. That is the 41st-straight sellout at Camp Randall Stadium.
- With its win Saturday, UW is 5-2 all-time in overtime games, including a 2-0 mark under head coach Bret Bielema.
- The victory was the third-consecutive win for the Badgers in an overtime game.
- Saturday's game was just the second in UW history to go to double overtime. The other was Sept. 23, 2000, when the Badgers suffered a 47-43 loss to Northwestern.
- The Badgers earned a fourth-quarter, come-from-behind win for the fifth time during Bielema's tenure as head coach. Wisconsin trailed, 21-17, at the start of the fourth quarter, with John Clay's 72-yard TD run serving as the go-ahead score.
- Wisconsin scored 17 points in the second quarter today. That is the most points in one period since scoring 18 in the fourth quarter against Minnesota on Nov. 15, 2008.
- Wisconsin finished without committing a turnover, the first time a UW team went without a giveaway since last year's matchup with Fresno State on Sept. 13, 2008.
- The Badgers' plus-3 turnover margin is their best in a game since also posting a plus-3 margin against Indiana in a home game on Oct. 27, 2007. The Badgers had two turnovers compared to five for the Hoosiers in that contest.
Offensive Notes
- Sophomore John Clay's 72-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter was the longest of his career (previous long: 46 at Michigan on Sept. 27, 2008 ) and the longest run by a UW player this season.
- Clay's run was the longest for the Badgers since David Gilreath's 90-yard run at Indiana on Nov. 8, 2008.
- With 143 yards, Clay picked up the fourth 100-yard rushing game of his career.
- Redshirt freshman offensive lineman Peter Konz saw his first career action, replacing an injured Travis Frederick at center during the Badgers' first offensive drive. True freshman wide receiver Kraig Appleton also made his Badger debut, appearing at wide receiver in the second quarter.
- Running back Zach Brown scored his first touchdown of the season and ninth of his career with an 11-yard run in the second quarter.
- Wide receiver David Gilreath became the second UW wide receiver in as many weeks to score a rushing touchdown. His eight-yard TD on an end-around in the second quarter was his sixth career touchdown and third on the ground.
- Redshirt freshman running back Erick Smith recorded his first career carry in the third quarter.
- Sophomore Nick Toon's touchdown reception in the first overtime period was the second TD catch of his career. The first came in the Badgers' 2008 regular-season finale vs. Cal Poly on Nov. 22, 2008.
Defensive Notes
- Wisconsin's three interceptions of Ryan Colburn was the most for the Badgers in a game since picking off three passes against Illinois on Oct. 25, 2008.
- True freshman David Gilbert saw his first career action at defensive end during the first quarter.
- Cornerback Niles Brinkley, who led UW with four interceptions last season, recorded the Badgers' first INT of the season in the third quarter. It was the fifth pick of Brinkley's career.
- One series later sophomore Antonio Fenelus came up with his first career interception on a pass that was tipped by linebacker Culmer St. Jean.
- Senior Chris Maragos grabbed the second interception of his career when he picked off Colburn in the end zone during the second overtime period. His first career INT came against Illinois on Oct. 25, 2008.
- Senior O'Brien Schofield recorded a career-high 11 tackles, surpassing his previous career best of seven. He also tallied a team-high four tackles-for-loss, improving on his previous best of 2.5. Both of his previous career-highs were set last Saturday in UW's win over Northern Illinois.
Special Teams Notes
- Kicker Philip Welch missed his first three field goal attempts of the season but made Badger history with his fourth FG attempt. Just before halftime, he connected on a 57-yard field goal, the longest of his career and the second-longest in school history (modern era). The longest FG in school history is a 60-yarder by John Hall on Nov. 11, 1995 against Minnesota in the Metrodome.
- Welch's 22-yard field goal in the second overtime was the first game-winning field goal of his career.
- Brad Nortman's first three punts today each traveled at least 50 yards. He punted six times for an average of 47.5 yards per punt with a long of 58.
