
Baumann takes second at Baylor Invite

After three days of grueling match play, UW senior Moritz Baumann smiled with pride as he held his second-place trophy at the Baylor Invitational in Waco, Texas.
The second-seeded Badger had to defend off four opponents to advance to the final round where he lost in two sets 6-2, 6-2 to the No. 4 seed Jordan Rux of Baylor University.
Baumann swept through his earlier opponents, defeating Marcos Horny of Baylor 6-4, 6-4; George Chanturia of Oklahoma 6-1, 6-3; No. 8-ranked Phillip Stevens of Tulsa 6-2, 6-2; and No. 14-seed Anton Bobytski of Oklahoma State 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.
This senior also advanced to the semifinals in doubles alongside junior Marek Michalicka. The No.1-seeded duo defeated Jim Brouleau and Arthur Surreaux of New Mexico State 8-6 on Friday.
The pair continued their success on Saturday when they beat James Langford and Dmitry Novikov of Texas A&M CC in an 8-5 match. Later that night Baumann and Michalicka fell 8-4 to Gonzalo Escobar and Andre Stabile of Texas Tech in a close semifinal match.
Partners Michael Dierberger and Patrick Pohlmann advanced to the quarterfinals in the tournament before losing to the No. 3-seed Marcos Horny and Jordan Rux of Baylor who went on to win the doubles bracket.
In singles, the No. 5-ranked Michalicka defeated two opponents to reach the round of 16.
Friday he battled against Jim Brouleau of NMSU in a tough 6-7, 7-5, 6-3 win. Saturday Michalicka defeated Dmitry Novikov of A&M CC 6-4, 6-4 before falling 6-3, 6-3 to Gonzalo Escobar of Texas Tech.
Sophomore Patrick Pohlmann defeated two opponents to reach the round of 16 before losing 6-1, 6-1 to the No.10-ranked Attila Bucko of Baylor University.
The Badgers are back in action Oct. 2 ' 4 when they compete in the Wildcat Fall Invitational in Evanston, Ill.
