The sun was shining for the Badgers as they opened their 2009 season at the brand new Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country course.

In the inaugural event at the course, junior Emily Perina finished first for the Badgers and third overall with a time of 15:21. 'My teammates helped me out with that one,' Perina said. 'I thank them for pushing me to the finish.'

Teammates Lindsey Kong (sophomore) and Cassidi Running (freshman) finished next on the 4- kilometer course, with times of 15:24 and 15:26, respectively.

Unattached runners claimed the first two positions, with Jessica Monson placing first with a time of 14:10 and former UW runner Sarah Hurley finishing close behind.

Sophomore Joanna Zurko placed eighth at 15:44 next to teammates Hope Marshall at 15:51 and Megan Beers at 15:55. Kate Sanft rounded out the squad, finishing 14th with a time of 16:28. No team scores were kept.

An overall excitement was in the air as the Badgers hosted their first home meet in nearly nine years. 'The course is young and it has a little bit of a maturing to do, but it's going to be a great course and already it's a superb facility,' said Wisconsin Head Coach Jim Stintzi. 'We're excited about it.'

The Badgers also had several runners compete in a two-kilometer race, with Sarah Sutherland crossing the finish line first with a time of 7:40.9. Fellow UW runners Carli Ditscheit and Kelly Bogard followed closely behind at 7:42.0 and 8:04.6, respectively.

The new, world-class cross country course features an exterior loop of approximately 2,500 meters with an interior loop of 1,000 meters. It stands next to the University Ridge golf course on the west side of Madison.
