MADISON, Wis. - Rallying from a six-point deficit in the third set, the Wisconsin volleyball team downed Seattle University in the first round of the Oregon State/Active Ankle Challenge. The Badgers beat the Redhawks 25-20, 23-25, 25-23, 25-14 to even their record at 2-2.
After splitting the first two sets, Wisconsin trailed 23-17 in the third set. Behind three kills from Brittney Dolgner, the Badgers went on an 8-0 run to take the game. Dolgner, who didn't play the first two sets, tallied seven kills in the period and finished with a team-high 12 kills for the match. She also added 12 digs to record her first double-double of the season.
'"We made a great comeback in that game and that really turned the match around,"' said UW coach Pete Waite. "'It''s a good start and we''re 1-0. We certainly haven''t played our best ball yet and these other two teams are very strong and we ''re going to have step it up to get the wins."'
Dolgner was the only Badger in double-figure kills as Caity DuPont and Allison Wack both added nine kills to the UW offense. Wisconsin finished with a 59-42 advantage in kills and also hit .227 as a team compared to .134 for the Redhawks. Seattle (1-4) was led by Kaytlyn Dill with 14 kills and Cristin Richards added 12 kills.
Janelle Gabrielsen put up 36 of the UW''s 55 assists as she was replaced by Jessa Benson, who had seven assists, in the third set. Kim Kuzma tallied a career-high eight assists.
Kuzma tallied double-figure digs for her sixth-consecutive match, recording 11 saves. Gabrielsen added 10 digs to the Badger defense. UW totaled 57 team digs while Seattle had 54 saves, including a match-high 18 digs from Emily Deleissegues.
Wisconsin still struggled with its block, stopping nine shots, while the Redhawks tied a school record with 17 stuffs. Kelsey Maloney led the Badgers with a career-best six blocks. Seattle's Jordan Keller led all players with nine blocks, including two solos.
In the first set, Wisconsin lead by five points early (9-4), but Seattle came back within two (15-13), taking advantage of four service errors by the Badgers in the set. UW went on a 3-0 run to go up 18-13, a lead it would not relinquish. The Badgers hit .379 for the set as Wack and DuPont both had four kills.
The Badgers led for most of the second set but the Redhawks used their block to pull out the win. Wisconsin lead 23-20 before Seattle went on a 5-0 run, scoring three points off blocks. UW hit just .119 for the second set while SU tallied six blocks in the period.
Wisconsin led 4-1 in the third set before Seattle went on a 7-0 run to take an 8-4 lead. The Badgers struggled with their offense, hitting just .109 for the period. UW pulled within one several times, including at 15-14, but the Redhawks would take their largest lead of the game at 23-17. Wack had a block solo to start the come-from-behind rally and also added a service ace.
After losing the third set, Seattle fell behind 8-3 in the fourth set. The Redhawks never got back on track, as they hit just .100 for the set while the Badgers hit .394.
Wisconsin continues tournament play on Sunday, taking on Cal State Fullerton at 10 a.m. PT and host Oregon State at 7 p.m. PT.
