Volleyball falls to CSU Fullerton

MADISON, Wis. - The Wisconsin volleyball team struggled with its offense, falling to Cal State Fullerton 25-23, 25-16, 25-22 in the second round of the Oregon State/Active Ankle Challenge. The Badgers (2-3) hit just .068 for the match as the Titans (5-0) stopped the UW offense, recording 16 team blocks.

UW failed to have a player in double-figure kills as Brittney Dolgner led the team with nine kills. Kirby Toon and Allison Wack both added six kills. Wisconsin put down 36 team kills, compared to 38 for CSU Fullerton (5-0), but the Titans hit .190 for the match. Erin Saddler led CSU with 16 kills while Kayla Neto added nine kills.

Janelle Gabrielsen had 23 assists for the UW while Andrea Ragan put up 33 assists for the Titans.

Neto tallied seven of Fullerton's 16 team blocks with the Badgers stopping just six shots. Kelsey Maloney led the UW with three blocks.

Wisconsin had three players in double-figure digs, led by Kim Kuzma with 17. Gabrielsen added 15 digs and Dolgner had 12 saves as the Badgers totaled 58 digs. CSU Fullerton had 67 digs led by Cami Croteau with 21 saves.

Dolgner led the UW with two service aces as the Badgers tallied four aces. The Titans had six aces, including three from Jennifer Edmond.

The Badgers led 21-16 in the first set but the Titans went on a 9-2 run to win the set. A bad touch call on a UW block seemed to take the wind out of Wisconsin's sails as it struggled the rest of the set. The Titans had six blocks in the period while Saddler was nearly unstoppable on offense, tallying eight kills.

Wisconsin struggled with its passing in the second set. The Badgers led 10-8 but CSU Fullerton scored four straight to take a 12-10 lead. UW stayed within two (14-12) but the Titans scored five straight, including two points off blocks, to take an 18-12 lead. UW hit a negative .048 for the period as the Titans added another seven blocks.

The third set featured five ties, including at 22-22. Wisconsin rallied from a 22-20 deficit in the period to tie the score behind two kills from Caity DuPont. The Titans took the lead with a kill from Saddler and served for match point after a block. A service ace from Ragan sealed the sweep for CSU.

The Badgers wrap-up tournament play at 7 p.m. PT tonight against host Oregon State.
