MADISON, Wis. -- The 2010 edition of the Wisconsin men’s track and field team features plenty of experience, but it was underclassmen that helped the Badgers get the new year off to a fast start.
Wisconsin won nine of the 15 events contested on the second day of the Badger Quad, running up a total score of 196 to outpace runner-up Marquette (123), Milwaukee (98) and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (86) at the Camp Randall Memorial Sports Center.
The bulk of the Badgers’ wins came on the track, with freshman Gavin Robertson and sophomores Grant Bughman and Andrew Milenkovski each claiming multiple events.
Robertson held off teammate Chas DeMers to take the 200 meters, as the freshman clocked in at 22.12 to take the one-lap race with DeMers on his heels at 22.14. He also was the top collegiate finisher in the 60-meter dash at 6.98, trailing only unattached runners Demi Omole – a former Badgers All-American who took the win in 6.79 – and Troy Brooks.
Milenkovski, who missed the majority of the 2009 season, grabbed the win in the 400 meters in 50.11 and also contributed a leg of the Badgers’ winning effort in the 4x400-meter relay.
He anchored the Badgers home to the win in 3:18.86, with sophomore Patrick Plank, junior Quinn Evans and sophomore Grant Bughman setting the table.
Bughman also claimed the win in the 600 meters with a time of 1:22.27, a race in which Plank ran 1:22.62 to finish third.
Senior Nate Larkin also was a winner, running a time of 8.02 to take top honors in the 60-meter hurdles. That placed him in front of teammate Adam Hexum, who was second in 8.22.
Wisconsin also found success in the distance and middle distance events, beginning with junior Zach Beth’s win in the mile. The 800-meter specialist clocked in at 4:12.90 to hold off freshman teammate Zach Mellon (4:13.36).
Junior Luke Rucks was the winner in the 800, recording a time of 1:55.99, and redshirt freshman Maverick Darling ran 8:20.18 to run away with the victory in the 3,000 meters.
Wisconsin’s lone win in the field events came courtesy of senior Rayme Mackinson, who posted a leap of 23 feet, 6 3/4 inches to win the long jump.
Junior Mickey DeFilippo scored a runner-up finish in the pole vault, as his clearance at 15 feet, 9 inches was the top mark by a collegian in the field. Joe Samaniuk, the Badgers’ volunteer assistant coach, won the event while competing unattached by getting over the bar at 17-2 3/4.
The Badgers continue their string of three-consecutive home events to open the indoor season next Saturday, Jan. 23, when they play host to the Badger Track Classic in The Shell. Field events are set to begin at 11 a.m., with finals on the track scheduled to start at 1:15 p.m.
