MADISON, Wis. - The Wisconsin women's tennis team didn't let an early loss against Illinois-Chicago on Saturday keep them down. The Badgers came back in the afternoon to shut out Green Bay 7-0 to bring their record to 2-1 in non-conference play.
The Badgers started off strong against UIC claiming all three doubles matches with freshmen Hannah Berner and Kathleen Saltarelli leading the way in the No. 3 slot with a quick 8-1 win.
Wisconsin's Nos. 4 and 6 grabbed quick wins in singles play to bring the Badgers up 3-0. UIC didn't back down though and came up with 3 wins in the Nos. 1, 2, and 5 spots. The game then came down to the No. 3 spot between Angela Chupa for UW and Zlatka Petrova for UIC. After a back and forth match, Petrova came out on top after a tiebreak decision.
After a tough 4-3 loss in the morning to UIC, the Badgers came out strong against Green Bay in the afternoon match. Wisconsin swept Green Bay in doubles to take a 1-0 lead.
"In regards to the match this morning," head coach Brain Fleishman said, "Illinois-Chicago is a huge set back at this point in time in the season, but I think we're going to learn from it and bounce back. I think the girls did a good job coming back this afternoon and beating UW Green Bay.
The Badgers were able to take that momentum into singles play this time as they dominated the Phoenix capturing all six wins in straight sets.
Berner led the way for the Badgers going undefeated on the day. Against UIC Berner was one of two UW wins in singles with a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Kristen McPhillips. She came back against Green Bay picking up another 8-1 doubles win with Saltarelli, this time in the No. 2 slot. She completed the sweep with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Morgan Weuve of Green Bay at the No. 3 slot.
Junior and co-captain Jessica Seyferth saw her first action of the season against Green Bay. She made it count with a 6-0, 6-1 singles win and an 8-3 doubles win paired with Alaina Trgovich at the No. 3 slot.
"Tomorrow we have Notre Dame who is No. 5 in the country." Said Fleishman, " I think we're going to try to use the early loss in the morning to Illinois-Chicago as kind of wakeup call and hopefully we can upset them tomorrow."
Wisconsin finishes the weekend off tomorrow hosting No. 5 Notre Dame at 12 p.m. at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
