MADISON, Wis. – After opening its season with a win over Milwaukee, the Wisconsin men’s swimming and diving team has been honored with the first Swimmer of the Week and Diver of the Week awards of the season, the Big Ten Conference announced Tuesday.
Sophomore Daniel Lester (Brisbane, Australia) received his first career Swimmer of the Week award after helping the Badgers to a 146-84 victory with his first-place performance in the 100-yard butterfly. His NCAA ‘B’ qualifying time of 48.33 is the second-fastest time for the event this year, only 13-hundredths of a millisecond behind Cal’s Tom Shields. He also won the 200-yard freestyle and helped Wisconsin win the 200-yard medley relay.
Sophomore Michael Ross (Wilmette, Ill.) picked up his second career Diver of the Week award. He took first place in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions, setting a school record in the 1-meter with his score of 386.78. Ross came within less than a point of also breaking a school record in the 3-meter, which was set just last season. Ross was also the last Badger to win the Diver of the Week award, doing so on November 3, 2009.
This is the first time since October 9, 2007 that both honorees have been from Wisconsin.
