MADISON, Wis. -- Facing a 1-0 deficit in the second period, Wisconsin (5-2-1, 2-1-1 WCHA) would rally for three second period goals en route to a 4-1 victory over Michigan Tech Saturday at the Kohl Center. The Badgers swept the weekend series and improved to 4-0-0 at home this season.
Wisconsin and Michigan Tech (3-2-2, 1-2-1 WCHA) would skate to a scoreless first period, marked by an early power-play chance for the Badgers and a 10-6 edge for the Huskies in shots.
In the second period, Michigan Tech would take advantage of a power play when Alex MacLeod scored the game's first goal. MacLeod found open space by the right faceoff circle and put a slap shot past Brett Bennett (Williamsville, N.Y.) to give the Huskies a 1-0 at 10:01of the second period.
Justin Schultz (West Kelowna, B.C) would tie the game with a goal just four minutes later. Schultz carried the puck into the zone and shot from in front of the net, sneaking a wrist shot past the goalie.
Craig Smith (Madison, Wis.) would give the Badgers the lead for good at 18:30 of the second period. Smith skated the puck up the ice on a 2-on-2 break and put a wrist shot over the goaltender's left shoulder.
Just 53 seconds later, Ryan Little (Fond du Lac, Wis.) would extend the lead to 3-1 by converting a one-timer from Patrick Johnson (Madison, Wis.). Johnson skated the puck behind the net and found Little directly in front of the crease for the goal.
In the third period, Sean Dolan (St. Louis) would cap the scoring with the Badgers' first short-handed goal of the season. Dolan returned from the penalty box, received a pass from Patrick Johnson, and stickhandled past the defense for the goal.
Four Badgers finished the day with multiple points. Patrick Johnson recorded three assists, and John Ramage (St. Louis) also chipped in with two assists. Sean Dolan and Ryan Little each added a goal and an assist.
Brett Bennett made 28 saves for the Badgers to improve his record to 3-0-0. Kevin Genoe took the loss for Michigan Tech, making 23 saves but falling to 2-2-1.
Despite scoring shorthanded, the Badgers were 0-for-2 on the power play, while Michigan Tech was 1-for-6 with the man advantage. The Badgers also killed off 1:12 of a 5-on-3 in the third period.
Wisconsin travels to Minnesota next weekend to face the Golden Gophers. Games are Friday and Saturday night at 7 pm. Friday's game airs on FSN Wisconsin, while Saturday's contest airs on Big Ten Network.
