ANN ARBOR, Mich. --Ever since the Big Ten Conference season has begun, the Wisconsin volleyball team has struggled to finish things off and tonight was no exception. The Badgers lost its fifth straight match of the Big Ten season, falling to No. 18 Michigan 25-17, 26-24, 25-21.
We came out flat in the first set and didn't pass and couldn't serve receive," said UW coach Pete Waite. "(The Wolverines) were passing some great balls and really running their offense. We did come out strong in the second set but just couldn't finish them off."
While the Badgers (11-5 overall, 0-5 Big Ten) started off slow in the first set as they struggled on offense in the first set, hitting .219 while Michigan hit .485. The Wolverines (15-2, 4-1) doubled up Badgers in kills 20-10 for the win.
Mary Ording sparked the Badgers in the second set with five kills, including one at 15-12, giving the UW its largest lead of the set. Michigan battled back and tied the set at 19. The set was tied two more times, including at 23-23. The Badgers held off one set point at 24-23, tying the period at 24-24 off a kill by Alexis Mitchell, but Michigan got two kills from setter Lexi Zimmerman to take a 2-0 lead. Wisconsin has now dropped five sets in Big Ten play by two points.
"Mary did really well," says Waite. "She's a strong kid out there, a fiery kid. She blocked a couple of balls and she really got us on track."
Set three was similar to the second set as the score was tied through 17. Michigan went on a 3-0 run to lead 20-17. The Wolverines upped their lead to 23-19 off a UW attack error and Wisconsin held off one match point before another Badger hitting error gave Michigan the win.
Michigan outhit Wisconsin, 47 to 38 in kills, and led with a .367 hitting percentage in comparison to the Badger's .258.
Alexis Mitchell led both teams with 15 kills but was the only Badger in double digits. Mary Ording, Elle Ohlander, and Allison Wack each contributed five kills.
Alex Hunt was the Wolverine's kill leader with 12 on the night. Claire McElheny was close behind with nine. Middleton, Wis., native Molly Toon, the younger sister of UW sophomore Kirby Toon, added six kills.
(Michigan) has a very balanced attack," said Waite. "I thought their passing was very strong. We did serve better in the second and third sets but they have a setter who can put the ball wherever she wants and she's very active."
Janelle Gabrielsen put up 28 assists for the Badgers and added a team-best 10 digs. She also had one block solo as Wisconsin was outblocked 3.5 to 2.
Michigan's Lexi Zimmerman had 37 assists along with six kills and six digs.
The Wolverines had five aces on the night and seven errors while the Badgers had only one, from freshman Annemarie Hickey, and nine errors.
Michigan also outdug Wisconsin 37-26, led by 13 from Sloane Donhoff. .
The Badgers will try to regroup before taking on Michigan State tomorrow night at 7 p.m. in East Lansing, Mich.
