St. Louis, Mo. - The 2010-11 season started on a sour note for the Badgers as they dropped their season opener Friday night 4-3 to No. 14 Boston University. The No. 13 Badgers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but were defeated on a third period goal by BU which snapped a 3-3 tie.

The first two Badger goals of the season came in rapid succession. The first Badger of the season to find the net was sophomore center Derek Lee (North Vancouver, B.C.). On the power play, junior Jordy Murray (Fairbault, Minn.) deflected a shot on net and Lee put home the rebound at 13:01 of the first period.

A mere nine seconds later, redshirt sophomore Ryan Little (Fond du Lac, Wis.) scored his first career goal on a back-door redirection of a Sean Dolan (St. Louis, Mo.) pass.

BU came back to tie the game with two power-play goals. Senior Joe Pereira scored on a rebound at 7:53 of the first, and David Warsofsky scored with 4:47 remaining in the first period.

The Badgers would take a 3-2 lead into the first intermission after Murray scored the team's second power-play goal of the game to cap a high scoring first period. Murray scored on a one-timer from the left hash mark. Freshman Mark Zengerle (Rochester, N.Y.) recorded his first collegiate point with an assist on the goal that came at 4:15 of the first period, while Lee made the pass to Murray's stick.

In the second period, the game was tied by yet another power-play goal by BU. Charlie Coyle tapped in a David Warsofsky pass at the back of the net with 10:45 left in the second period.

The game remained tied going into the third period. Then BU captain Joe Pereira victimized the Badgers once again, scoring his second goal of the game on a breakaway at 17:05 of the third period.

That lead would hold up despite multiple late efforts from the Badgers to record the tying goal. With 2:42 left in the third, John Ramage (St. Louis, Mo.) took a shot that appeared to hit off an inside bar and bounce out, however it was ruled no goal. Shortly after the decision, a puck that deflected off a Badger knee at the side of the goal and that found the net was also waived off.

The new NCAA rules limiting helmet to the head contact came into play early for the Badgers, as UW's leading returning scorer sophomore Craig Smith (Madison, Wis.) was sent off with a game misconduct penalty at 1:15 of the first period.

The Badgers were outshot by BU 32-27. Scott Gudmanson made 28 saves for the Badgers but was saddled with his first loss of the season. Kieran Millan made stopped 24 Badger shots to get the win for BU. Special teams also played a big factor in the game, as the Badger scored twice on the power play but also gave up three goals while shorthanded.

The Badgers will take on Holy Cross in the consoliation game of the Ice Breaker Tournament on Sunday at noon.
