MADISON, Wis. -– The 2010 World Rowing Championships are underway at Lake Karapiro, New Zealand and two of the three former Badgers at the event have raced so far.
Ryan Fox (Edgerton, Wis.), a member of the lightweight men’s four for the United States, helped his crew advance to Thursday’s semifinals by taking second place in the third heat on Monday. The first U.S. boat to advance at the regatta, Fox and his crew finished the 2000-meter course in 5:58.52, crossing shortly behind Switzerland (5:57.52) for second place. Italy, Japan, Austria and Thailand were also in the heat.
“Our plan was to make it through the heats, so that’s what we did,” said Fox. “We would have liked to win, but we rowed within ourselves and didn’t mess it up at the end. The water was getting pretty rough. We tried to make a move, but it wasn’t as effective as we maybe wanted, but it got us through.”
On Tuesday, Kristin Hedstrom’s (Concord, Mass.) lightweight women’s quadruple sculls placed sixth of six boats entered in the event, however the race was only to set lanes for the coming finals. China won the race in 6:35.27, with Great Britain, Italy, Germany and Thailand placing ahead of the Americans. Hedstrom and the U.S. boat were a distant sixth in 7:37.75.
In addition to Fox and Hedstrom, Kenny McMahon (Ladysmith, Wis.) is scheduled to compete in the men’s lightweight eight on Wednesday.
