MADISON, Wis. – Running back James White has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week after his performance in Saturday’s 48-28 victory over Michigan, the Big Ten announced on Monday. It marks the fourth time this season that White has picked up the honor.
In addition to the Big Ten distinction, White was also named the National Freshman of the Week by Rivals.com.
White, whose previous career high was 145 yards set against Austin Peay on Sept. 25, rushed 23 times for a career-high 181 yards and scored two touchdowns as Wisconsin racked up 357 yards rushing on the ground against the Wolverines.
With Montee Ball rushing for 173 yards also, White and Ball became just the second pair in school history to each rush for over 150 yards in the same game.
White, who put up 92 yards in the first half and 89 in the second half, scored his first touchdown on a 61-yard run off the left tackle to put Wisconsin up 24-0 late in the first half. It was his second touchdown run of over 60 yards this season. He then added a 23-yard score with 5:31 left in the third quarter to put UW up 31-14.
On the day, White finished with a career-high 246 all-purpose yards as he also caught two passes for 19 yards and returned two kickoffs for 46 yards.
This season, White has rushed for 895 yards and scored 13 touchdowns on 128 carries. His average of 7.0 yards per carry would set a new school record for a single season, while he is just 105 yards away from becoming the fourth freshman at UW to gain 1,000 rushing yards in one year.
