MADISON, Wis. -- Poor passing did in the Wisconsin volleyball team as the Badgers dropped a 25-22, 25-20, 25-20 decision at Purdue on Friday night. The Badgers rallied from deficits in the first two sets and led in the third set but couldn't hold off the Boilermakers.
"Purdue was serving tough tonight and kept our passers on their heels," explained UW coach Pete Waite. "But it translated into a couple of our outside hitters struggling a little bit. I don't think we got the ball to (Janelle Gabrielsen) comfortably and she had to put the ball to the outside hitters a lot and they had double blocks a lot of the time."
Purdue (20-10 overall, 11-8 Big Ten) outblocked the Badgers 7-4, including three blocks in the third set. The Boilermakers also hit .265 (42 kills - 16 errors - 98 attempts) while Wisconsin (16-14, 5-14) hit just .144 (34-20-97).
"We had some players put up some nice numbers," said Waite. "We just needed a couple more people offensively and if we had that, I think we would have got them."
Allison Wack shared match-high honors with 11 kills while Mary Ording put away nine kills for the Badgers. Purdue was led by left-side hitters Anna Drewry and Ariel Turner, who both had 11 kills.
Drewry and Kristen Arthurs led the Boilermakers with three blocks apiece while Wisconsin was led by Ording and Elle Ohlander with two blocks each.
Purdue finished with six service aces while the Badgers scored on five aces, led by a career-high three from Ashley Wiedmeyer.
"We had Ashley in there because she has a nice deep serve and which means she goes way back, far off the court and really bombs it at teams and tonight it was really on," said Waite. "She went on quite a streak there and did some nice things there so I was really happy for her."
Wiedmeyer led an 11-2 run by the Badgers in the first set, serving six straight points, including two off service aces. The Badgers trailed 17-9 before the rally and took a 20-19 lead. UW couldn't hold off the charge of the Boilermakers who got two kills from Turner for a 25-22 win.
"Obviously, you don't want to start in a hole like that but I thought it was good the way the team came back and fought to tie it and to be right in that set," said Waite. "I think that was a big momentum swing and I wish that we could have finished it off because that would have carried us into the second set."
In the second set, the Badgers trailed by three (19-16) but came back to within one at 20-19 off a kill from Elle Ohlander. Purdue again has a late charge as Turner had two kills and Drewry added a kill and a block solo to key the second set win 25-20.
Wisconsin led 13-10 in the third set off an ace from Alexis Mitchell but Purdue scored three straight to tie the set at 13. The Badgers stayed within one (17-16) before the Boilermakers had two blocks to key a 4-1 run and take a 21-17 lead. UW could get no closer as Purdue completed the sweep.
"It's a matter of hitting on all cylinders and there's times we'll have these three people offensively do well and then a couple other won't and the next night it will be a couple other people," said Waite. "When we get three or four of them hitting on all cylinders, then those are nights we win."
The Badgers wrap up their season on Saturday, playing at Indiana. First serve is at 7 p.m. ET from the University Gym in Bloomington, Ind.
