MADISON, Wis. -- Former Wisconsin women's lightweight rower Kristin Hedstrom (Concord, Mass.) won a silver medal at the 2010 World Rowing Championships at Lake Karapiro, New Zealand on Saturday.
Hedstrom's crew captured their medal in the women’s lightweight quadruple sculls.
The boat was second off the line and went after the German crew that quickly took the lead. The U.S. chased Germany the entire 2,000 meters, but finished second in a time of 6:47.99 to Germany’s 6:44.94. China took bronze in 6:44.94.
“I feel pretty good,” said Hedstrom. “I think we would have liked to have gotten gold; that’s what we came out here to do. But we pushed the whole way down the course. We saw Germany out in front and just pushed the whole way. These girls are tough; it was great to row with them.”
Hedstrom rowed alongside Abby Broughton, Ursula Grobler and Victoria Burke in the silver-medal winning boat.
Leading off the day for the U.S. in the B finals was the lightweight men’s four. The crew that included former Badger Ryan Fox (Edgerton, Wis.), along with Will Daly, Nick LaCava and Anthony Fahden started fourth, climbed into third in the middle half, but fell back and finished fourth in a time of 6:05.57 to capture 10th place overall. France won the B final in 6:02.19.
