KALAMAZOO, Mich. –After three days of play at the WMU Super Challenge Invitational, the University of Wisconsin women's tennis team posted an 8-4 record in singles play led by freshman Jenny Hois (Downers Grove, Ill.), who finished with a 3-0 record.
On the first day of singles competition, the Badgers posted a 2-2 record against Penn State.
Junior Aleksandra Markovic (Belgrade, Serbia) defeated Penn State’s Marie-Frederique Bedard 6-3, 6-1, and Hois claimed a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (3) victory over Maria Prishlyak.
Freshman Nicky Stracar (Jericho, N.Y.) lost to Petra Januskova 6-3, 6-0, while redshirt junior Alaina Trgovich (Munster, Ind.) fell to Amy Simidian, 6-3, 6-1.
On the second day of singles matches, the Badgers were a perfect 4-0 against Western Michigan competitors.
Markovic earned a 4-6, 6-0, 1-0 (9) win over Miloslava Shustova, Hois defeated Nini Sujashvili 6-1, 6-0, Stracar beat Maggie Remynse 7-6, 6-2, and Trgovich overcame Maria Nivia to win 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (7).
On the final day of singles play, the Badgers split four matches, finishing 2-2 to end competition.
Hois beat Louisville’s Rebecca Shine in a close 7-5, 7-5 match, ending the invitational with a 3-0 record.
Trgovich defeated Indiana’s Katya Zapadalova 6-7 (3) 6-4, 1-0 (3), to go 2-1 in the tournament.
Stracar finished the tournament with a 1-2 record after falling to Indiana’s Leslie Hureau 6-2, 6-7, and Markovic ended singles play with a 1-2 record after dropping her last match to Indiana’s Evgeniya Vertesheva, 6-3, 6-3.
In doubles play, Wisconsin posted a 0-2 record against Depaul teams and a 2-0 record against duos from Iowa State.
The team of Trgovich and Stracar defeated Erin Karonis and Marie-Christine Chartier, 8-4, and lost to Selma Salkovic and Katarina Milinkovic, 8-5.
Markovic and Hois took an 8-2 match over Nikki Reber and Liza Wischer, but were defeated, 8-5, by Gia McKnight and Kelsey Lawson.
On day two, Trgovich and Stracar lost 8-6 to Penn State’s Petra Januskova and Fernanda Perrotta, and the pair of Markovic and Hois defeated PSU’s Amy Simidian and Marie-Frederique Bedard, 8-3.
The WMU Invitational concludes Wisconsin’s fall season. The Badgers resume competition Jan. 22, 2011, when they take on Old Dominion in Norfolk, Va. for their first dual of the 2011 season.
