MADISON, Wis. -- In a hard-fought game, Wisconsin (12-7-3, 6-6-2 WCHA) took advantage of a pair of fortunate bounces in the third period to capture a 4-2 victory over Massachusetts (3-9-3, 2-4-3 Hockey East) at the Kohl Center on New Year's Eve.
In a game with high-scoring UW rookie forward Mark Zengerle (Rochester, N.Y.) and UMass senior captain and goaltender Paul Dainton tossed for a scrum at the end of the first period, Wisconsin emerged as the survivor.
Fast Facts | UW owns a five-game winning streak, its longest since the 2008-09 season. | Senior forward Podge Turnbull has five goals in his four-game goal-scoring streak. | Gudmandson made his seventh straight start in goal for the Badgers. | |
UW started fast, putting up seven of the first nine shots, but the Minutemen took advantage of a 52-second 5-on-3 to grab a late first-period lead. Daniel Hobbs converted a rebound for the first of three fluky goals in the game. The play started when Branden Gracel's stick broke on a shot attempt, but the puck still traveled on net. UW's senior goaltender Scott Gudmandson (Sherwood Park, Alberta) stopped it with his mask, but the puck dropped to Hobbs for the tap in.
The first ended with a scrum in front of the UMass goal, resulting in 19 penalty minutes to both teams and game misconducts for UW's Zengerle and UMass' Dainton.
UW turned the game with two goals in 33 seconds midway through the second period. Sophomore Craig Smith (Madison, Wis.) struck first, taking a Michael Mersch (Park Ridge, Ill.) pass and wristing a shot off the far post. The shot appeared to redirect off a UMass defender close to Smith.
Then at 10:37, the hot stick of senior Podge Turnbull tallied for the fourth straight game. Again it was Mersch with the immediate pass. The freshman popped free a loose puck behind replacement goaltender Jeff Teglia to Turnbull, who found the net through sprawled bodies for his eighth goal of the season.
Jordy Murray (Faribault, Minn.) notched his team-leading 12th goal of the season at 1:49 of the third period, which proved to be the game-winner. After taking a pass from Derek Lee, who was behind the net, Murray's centering attempt bounced off a UMass defenseman in front and into the net for 3-1 Badger lead.
UMass nearly made it a one-goal game at 17:22 of the second, getting a puck across the goal line. Upon review, however, the goal by T.J. Syner was disallowed when it was ruled a teammate interfered with Gudmandson in the crease.
Another bounce made it 4-1 for Bucky, this time with the Badgers shorthanded. Patrick Johnson (Madison, Wis.) dug the puck out behind the UMass goal and found an open Ryan Little (Fond du Lac, Wis.) in the slot. Little's backhand attempt was headed wide, but caromed off a UMass defensemen returning from behind the net and past Teglia for the goal. Little's second of the weekend and fifth of the season came at 10:41 of the third stanza.
UMass closed the gap to 4-2 on Chase Langeraap's major power-play goal at 19:31 of the period, but that was as close as the Minutemen would get.
Gudmandson improved to 9-5-1 with his fifth consecutive victory with his 26-save performance, while Jeff Teglia absorbed his second loss of the weekend, this time in a relief effort, to fall to 0-5-1 on the season. Dainton made nine first-period saves, before giving way to Teglia's two-period 13-save effort.
UW went scoreless on the power play for just the fifth time this season, going 0-for-4 with the man advantage. Massachusetts got both its goals on the power play and finished 2-for-9, while also allowing a short-handed tally.
Wisconsin returns to the Kohl Center ice next weekend, Jan. 7-8, for a series against Canisius. Friday's contest is `Blake Geoffrion Night' as the 2010 Hobey Baker Memorial Award winner will be honored before the game as the first Hobey Baker-winning Badger.
