MADISON, Wis. -- A personal-best run by junior Landon Peacock set the pace as the Wisconsin men’s track and field team’s distance group eased into competition at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash., on Friday.

Peacock was part of a trio of Badgers competing in the 5,000 meters inside the Dempsey Indoor and, along with freshman Mohammed Ahmed, locked down an NCAA championships provisional qualifying mark.

Competing in the fourth and final section of the event, Peacock clocked in 11th fastest in the field by turning in a career-best time of 13:57.52. The performance, which ranks just outside the Badgers’ all-time top 10 in the event, adds Peacock to an elite list of Wisconsin greats that have run under the 14-minute mark indoors.

Video of Peacock's run is available as part of Flotrack's coverage of the Husky Classic.

Ahmed also ran a personal-best time on his way to provisional NCAA qualification, clocking in at 14:05.59 to finish 10th in his section of the event. Redshirt freshman teammate Maverick Darling ran in the same heat and finished 16th in 14:17.59.

A full slate of events, which includes Wisconsin runners competing in the 800 meters, mile and 3,000 meters, begins at 10 a.m. Saturday.

While the Badgers’ distance crew made the long trek to the Northwest, the bulk of Wisconsin’s athletes stayed closer to home and began competition in the Iowa State Classic on Friday.

Junior Chas DeMers led a strong showing for the Badgers in the 200 meter dash, finishing sixth in a time of 21.67 seconds. He was followed by freshman Gavin Robertson, who placed ninth in 21.77, and sophomore Kyle Jefferson, who crossed in 21.87to finish 12th.

In the field events, a host of Badgers competitors were on display in the long jump.

Senior Rayme Mackinson led the way for Wisconsin with a fifth-place leap of 23 feet, 2 3/4 inches. He was followed by fellow senior Victor Dupuy, who finished 21st with a jump of 22-4 1/2. Next was freshman Joshua Flax in 29th place after jumping 21-6 1/4.

Sophomore Derek Steinbach was the next Badger with a leap of 20-11 1/4, good enough for 33rd place. Sophomore Ian Jansen earned himself a 41st-place finish after jumping 20-2 1/4. Jansen finished just ahead of senior Seth Pelock, who leapt 20-0 1/4.

The high jump featured junior Pat Nichols, who cleared 6-9 and earned himself a three-way tie for second place. Grzesiak finished tied with two other competitors for 11th place with a clearance of 6-5.

In the weight throw, senior Rory Linder threw 52 feet, 2 inches to finish in 37th place.

The Iowa State Classic continues Saturday with a full day of events, beginning with the women’s mile at 9 a.m.
