Junior Rob Dehn set the tone for the Badgers by winning the javelin throw with a mark of 218 feet, 4 inches. The throw was nearly 45 feet longer than the second-place finisher.

Dehn is the current school record-holder in the javelin throw as well as the reigning 2009 regional champion in the event.

Four Wisconsin athletes also had strong showings in the decathlon.

Halfway through the 10-event competition, sophomore David Grzesiak is in second place with a score of 3,482 points.

Senior Seth Pelock stands in third place with 3,418 while sophomore Ian Jansen is in fifth with 3,245 points.

Grzesiak was the second athlete to cross the line in the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.60.

In the long jump, Pelock and Grzesiak tied for the fourth-longest leap by jumping 20 feet, 9 inches.

Steinbach led the way for the Badgers in the shot put with the second-longest toss of any competitor, a throw of 40-7 3/4.

Grzesiak, at 6 feet, 3 1/2 inches, and Pelock, at 6-2 1/4, then had the second and third-highest clearances of the field in the high jump.

Grzesiak was third-fastest in the final event of the day, the 400 meters, at 51.31, with Jansen (51.93) fourth and Pelock (52.16) fifth.
