Runner-up finishes highlight first day of FSU Relays

MADISON, Wis. -- Robert Dehn proved the success he found in his outdoor season debut was no fluke Friday in Tallahassee, Fla.

Coming off a win in the javelin at last weekend’s Hurricane Invitational, the junior placed second in the event at the Florida State Relays with a throw of 217 feet, 2 inches.

Junior Luke Rucks and freshman Rob Finnerty claimed the second and third places in the invitational 1,500 meters. Rucks finished in 3:51.01, while Finnerty ran a time of 3:51.42.

In the 5,000 meters, freshman Elliot Krause finished second in a time of 14:22.65.

Also competing in the javelin was sophomore Derek Steinbach, who finished behind Dehn in fifth place with a throw of 191-6, and sophomore David Grzesiak, who finished 13th and threw for a distance of 155-10.

Wisconsin had five athletes place in the top 10 in the high jump.

Freshman Collin Taylor led the way with a third-place finish and a jump of 6-10 3/4. Taylor was followed by freshman Lukey Klitz, who took fifth with a clearance of 6-6 3/4.

Junior Pat Nichols and freshman Paul Annear also cleared 6-6 3/4 to take sixth and seventh place, respectively.

Grzesiak claimed 10th place after clearing a height of 6-4 3/4.

Senior Rory Linder placed second in the hammer throw, posting a mark of 158-7.

In other field events, a host of Badgers competed in the long jump.

Senior Rayme Mackinson was the top Wisconsin finisher, taking fifth place with a leap of 24-3 1/2.

Fellow senior Victor Dupuy finished behind Mackinson in sixth place and posted a jump of 23-5 1/4.

Senior Seth Pelock was next with a 12th-place finish and a jump of 21-4 3/4.

He was followed by Steinbach, who jumped 21-4 to claim 13th place.

Ian Jansen was the final Badger in the event. The sophomore posted a leap of 20-9 3/4 for a 15th-place finish.

In running events, Wisconsin started the day off with the 110-meter hurdles.

Senior Nate Larkin claimed second place and crossed the line in 14.23 seconds, while sophomore Temi Ogunbodede was next in fourth place and finished in 14.56.

He was followed by sophomore Adum Gross, who ran a time of 14.70 to claim fifth place. Adam Hexum finished seventh with a time of 14.91.

Grzesiak and Pelock wrapped up ninth and 10th place, finishing in 15.23 and 15.43 seconds, respectively.

Jansen concluded the event for Wisconsin with a 12th-place finish, crossing the line in 16.50.

Wisconsin continues competition at the Florida State Relays on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. with the discus.
