Badgers fall in close match to Hoosiers

March 27, 2010

In a tough match against No. 38-ranked Indiana on Saturday afternoon, the Badgers weren’t able to pull the upset, falling by a close, 4-3, score. The Wisconsin women’s tennis team now sits at a 5-11 overall and 0-3 in Big Ten play.

The Badgers got off to an early lead earning the doubles point with wins in the Nos. 1 and 3 spots. Angela Chupa and Katya Mirnova grabbed the first win of the day defeating Indiana’s Leslie Hureau and Charlotte Martin, 8-2. The UW duo of Hannah Berner and Alaina Trgovich claimed the doubles point in their 8-4 win over Myriam Sopel and Katya Zapadalova in the No. 1 spot heading into singles play.

Wisconsin’s Jessica Seyferth was able to extend the lead quickly with a 6-1, 5-2, win in the No. 3 slot as Zapadalova retired in the second set.

The Badgers then lost their momentum falling in the Nos. 1, 5, and 6 singles spots to put Indiana up 3-2. Chupa was able to make her match close in the No. 5 slot, winning the first set, 6-2, over IU’s Lindsey Stuckey, but falling in the second, 6-7. Chupa wasn’t able to come back in the third set though as Stuckey earned the win.

Berner, a freshman, took on No. 118-ranked Hureau in the No. 2 singles spot. Berner fell 6-0 in the first set but was able to come back to claim the second set, 7-6. Unfortunately, the momentum stayed with Hureau as she took the third set, 6-3, as Indiana took the match with its fourth match win of the day.

Although the match had been decided Trgovich didn’t give up in the No. 4 singles spot. Trgovich fell in the first set, 6-4, but fought back controlling the second set with a 6-1 win. The Badger was able to earn the win by taking the third set over IU, 6-4, to end the day in a 4-3 loss for Wisconsin.

The Badgers return home next weekend for two matches against Big Ten foes from Michigan. Wisconsin will host Michigan State on Saturday, April 3, and then be challenged against another top team as UW faces the No. 6 Michigan Wolverines on Sunday, April 4, Both match times are set for 11 a.m. at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
