Camden, N.J. – Novice rowers on the Badger women’s lightweight rowing team experienced their first collegiate rowing racing action as Wisconsin competed in the opening day of racing in the Knecht Cup on the Cooper River on Saturday.

The Badgers had two boats compete in the women’s frosh/novice eight quarterfinal and semifinal rounds. Wisconsin’s first novice eight boat advanced to Sunday’s grand final while the second novice eight boat will race in Sunday’s petite final.

The quarterfinals of the women’s frosh/novice eight race saw both UW novice eight boats move on to the semifinals. Wisconsin’s first novice eight boat won its heat in a time of 6:44.73, defeating Delaware, Pittsburgh, Drexel and Lafayette.

The Badgers’ second novice eight boat took third in its quarterfinal race in 7:33.47 behind North Carolina (7:23.05) and New Hampshire (7:23.32) but advanced to the semifinals as the first and second boats in each heat plus the next fastest times moved on.

In the first semifinal, UW’s first novice eight picked up its second first-place finish of the day. The Badgers clocked a 6:52.70 to defeat the next closest boat by 18.24 seconds as Connecticut took second in 7:10.94. With the top semifinal time, UW will race in lane three in the frosh/novice eight grand final on Sunday.

The second novice eight finished fifth in 7:29.11 in the second semifinal and will race in the petite final. Buffalo won the second semifinal in 6:56.54.

In addition to the novice eight boats racing in the finals on Sunday, two Wisconsin boats are slated to take on Buffalo, Lafayette, MIT and UMass in Sunday’s lightweight eight final at 11 a.m.

The lightweight varsity eight rowers raced in the first day of the Stanford Invitational in Redwood City, Calif., today, while the Badger openweight rowers took on Iowa, Minnesota and Louisville in the Big Ten Double Dual.
