MADISON, Wis. - The No. 5 Wisconsin lightweight women's rowing team is gearing up for the IRA National Championships where they will race on Saturday, May 31 and Sunday, June 1. The races will take place on the Cooper River in Camden, New Jersey.
Here are f(oar) things to know before the races kick off.
1. History of Excellence: Wisconsin has won five lightweight eight national championships in the history of the program and will look to make it six this weekend. The last time the Badgers took home the lightweight eight national championship was in 2009 where they finished with a time of 6:56.26 in a 2000-meter race.
2. The Field: This regatta will feature all the best teams in the country to see who the top team is. Among those competing will be No. 1 Princeton, No. 2 Harvard-Radcliffe, No. 3 Boston University, No. 4 Georgetown, No. 5 Stanford and No. 7 MIT. Wisconsin has seen each of these teams at least once this season, and has even competed in head-to-head matches with both Stanford and Georgetown.
3. Last Time Out: The Badgers last raced nearly a month ago in the Eastern Sprints where they finished in fourth place in team points against some of the best teams in the country. Head Coach Hadzo Habibovic was proud of the team's effort saying, "Our results continue to show that our young team is getting faster and deeper and we are confident in our ability to keep climbing the ranks."
