Camden, N.J. – Wisconsin’s lightweight novice rowers proved they are more than ready for collegiate rowing as the first novice eight picked up victories in the frosh/novice eight grand final and the lightweight eight final to conclude racing at the Knecht Cup on Sunday morning.
The Badger boat made up of coxswain Daniella Giustina, Meredith Freshley, Hillary Schmidt, Abby Knight, Constance Chucholowski, Gabrielle Read, Caroline Mansueti, Jessica Lund and Helen Beckner won both of its events.
In the novice eight grand final, UW clocked a 6:51.42 to take first place. Buffalo (7:02.10), UConn (7:07.11), Delaware (7:09.39), West Virginia (7:24.73) and UMass A (7:30.77) rounded out the grand final.
The UW boat won the lightweight eight final in similarly convincing fashion. The first Badger boat finished in 6:47.20, defeating second-place MIT by 13.71 seconds. Wisconsin’s second lightweight eight came in sixth in 7:41.78.
Wisconsin’s second novice eight also raced in the frosh/novice eight petite final. The Badgers came in fifth in 7:32.17, while Loyola won in 7:19.51.

The Wisconsin lightweight rowing team is slated to take on Radcliffe and MIT on May 1-2 in Boston.
